Available from Wednesday to Sunday at: 9h30am / 11h30am / 2h30pm / 4h30pm (sunset tour). Meals not included. On January 1st, 1502, a group of Portuguese explorers under the command of Gaspar de Lemos discovered Guanabara Bay. As it was January and the bay appeared to be a large river mouth, they named the area Rio de Janeiro (River of January). In terms of water volume, Guanabara Bay is the largest bay in the world – Rio de Janeiro city lies on the west hand side and Niteroí on the east, and there are several islands in between, such Governador, Fiscal, Paquetá and Cobra. Leaving from the hotel we’ll travel to the Marina da Glória and board the catamaran for the tour of Guanabara Bay (which lasts about 1 hour and 40 minutes). The tour offers a completely different perspective of Rio, passing first in front of Flamengo Beach
with a great view of Christ the Redeemer and the surrounding hills, and then past the old Urca Casino, where we’ll make our first stop at the foot of Sugarloaf Mountain to take photos and admire the landscape. From here we’ll go past the São João Fort (where the city of Rio de Janeiro was founded) and Santa Cruz fort, both of which were hugely important in the colonial period to protect the city from attack. Continuing on we’ll pass the beaches of Niterói on the other side of the bay and the architecturally famous Museum of Contemporary Art, designed by Oscar Niemeyer.
We’ll pass under the central span of the impressive Rio-Niterói Bridge – just this middle section is 72 meters high and 300 metres long (the longest of its type in the world) – and then head to see a unique perspective of the beautiful Museum of Tomorrow, one of the modern architectural icons of the city’s recently regenerated port area. To finish the tour we’ll pass by the Arsenal da Marinha military base and Fiscal Island Palace, Santos Dumont Domestic Airport and the Pracinhas Monument. The Catamaran is very comfortable, safe and has a highly trained crew. It has a capacity of over 100 people and is also wheelchair accessible. The main deck is air-conditioned and has a bar with a variety of drinks available (not included in the rate). The upper deck offers a panoramic view and the wide bow of the boat provides an excellent angular perspective of Guanabara Bay’s outstanding beauty.

The first cable-car takes passengers to the top of Urca Hill, which rises 215 meters above sea level and offers spectacular views of the entire bay and its islands. From Urca Hill, passengers continue in a second cable car to the top of Sugar Loaf which rises 395 meters above sea level and offers a 360 degree view of the entire city including Botafogo and Copacabana Beaches, Corcovado and downtown Rio.
